Obituary for Dr. Steve "Doc" Sulsberger
Dr. Steve "Doc" Sulsberger, 61, of Mapleton, Iowa passed away Monday, August 24, 2015, of complications of cancer, surrounded by family at a Sioux City hospital. The rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. Friday August 28 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Msgr. R. Mark Duchaine will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton Thursday, August 27 after 6:00 p.m. with a vigil wake service at 7:00 p.m. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton has been entrusted with the services. The family is receiving condolences on line at www.armstrongfuneral.com. ξSteve was born on April 3, 1954, and was raised on a farm north of Hornick, Iowa, son of Marvin and Alice (Faverty) Sulsberger. He graduated from Westwood High School in Sloan, and attended Iowa State University graduating in 1978 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He met his wife, Colleen, while working at a veterinary clinic in Dodge City, Kansas. They were married and opened the Mapleton Veterinary Clinic in 1980, where he practiced for 35 years. Doc loved golfing with friends, Mike Friedrichsen and Ed Trucke, swimming in the back yard, scuba diving, taking underwater photographs, and spending time with family and friends. He loved engineering and building something out of nothing - and keeping it running with his best friend, Greg Trucke. ξSteve loved helping young people, and he loved being a veterinarian. To honor his memory, the family plans to establish a memorial scholarship in his name to the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Those who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund are invited to do so in lieu of flowers. He is survived by his mother, Alice of Hornick, Iowa; his wife of 35 years, Colleen and his daughter Alyssa both of Mapleton, his son Ryan of Ames, Iowa; his brother, Todd Sulsberger and his wife, Debbie, also of Hornick; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. ξSteve is preceded in death by his father, Marvin Sulsberger; his maternal grandparents, Roy and Josie Faverty and his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Freda Sulsberger.
