Obituary for Donald R. Hamann

Donald R. Hamann, age 94, of Anthon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the Heritage Pointe-Senior Living Center in Omaha, NE.


A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 24, 2026, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, Iowa, with Rev. Marty Davis officiating. Committal Services will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery-Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa.


A Visitation will be held from 5:00p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2026, in the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Anthon, Iowa.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran or the charity of your choice.

Donald R. Hamann, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and more recently great-great grandfather, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Heritage Pointe assisted living in Omaha. Born on October 31, 1931, on the family farm east of Anthon, Iowa, to Frank and Dora (Strackbein) Hamann. Donald was baptized in the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Midway as an infant and later confirmed there into the Lutheran faith.


Don attended Midway Country School from kindergarten to 8th grade. At Anthon High School, Don lettered in track, baseball, music and basketball. He was captain of his basketball team, leading rebounder & scorer and led them to an undefeated conference season. He was the valedictorian of the Class of 1949. On June 26, 1949, Don married the love of his life, Lorna Towers in the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Midway. To this union four children were born Deborah, Stanley, Ellen and Jennifer.


Don had three distinct careers in his life farmer, implement dealer and real estate agent. After marrying Lorna, they farmed for 12 years. In 1962, Don purchased the International Harvester dealership in Anthon and ran it as Hamann Implement for five years before partnering with Mike Sauser to run Hamann-Sauser from 1967 until retirement in 1993 as a Case-IH dealership. His final career lasted 23 years selling farms and homes for McGuire Auction.


Don was very active in his community, leading and serving on numerous boards. He was president of the Sioux Valley Medical Clinic, Anthon Burial Society, Anthon Community Center, Anthon-Oto School Board, Anthon Archery Club, Willow Vale Golf Course and Trinity Lutheran Church where he held other offices as well. He was a long-time Anthon City Council member, Vice President and board member of WIMECA and the Woodbury County Compensation Committee.


He was a 3-time Iowa State Flight Bow and Arrow Champion for distance and he won the Mapleton and Anthon golf championships in different years.


Don was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Dora; his in-laws Ernest and Frances Towers; brothers Herald and Richard, sister Pauline and their spouses; and an infant sister.


Left to cherish his memory is his wife Lorna; his children Deborah (Ariel) Carman, Stanley (Debra) Hamann, Ellen (Mike) Keenan and Jennifer (Kippy) Hamann; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great, great granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
