Delbert L. Lafrentz Mapleton, Iowa - Delbert L. Lafrentz, 74, of Mapleton, Iowa passed away surrounded by his family Thursday, January 15, 2015, at his home in Mapleton following a short, courageous battle with lung cancer. The funeral service will be Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Rev. Scott Jensen will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be Sunday, January 18 after 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Delbert Lawayne Lafrentz was born July 17, 1940, in Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa to Harvey A. and Ethel (Hamann) Lafrentz. The family then moved to rural Mapleton, Iowa. Delbert was baptized March 22, 1953, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Charter Oak. He was confirmed there April 3, 1955.ξ Delbert attended country grade schoolξat Soldier Township and later Immanuel Lutheran School at Charter Oak. He attended his freshman year at Charter Oak High School, then through consolidation, attended the remainder of his high school years at Schleswig, graduating with the class of 1959. He was united in marriage to Rita Friedrichs on September 18, 1965 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. To this union, four children were born: Todd, Troy, Tricia, and Trent. For a period of seven years, Delbert worked for Darold Lee and in March of 1968, started farming on his own. In 1980, Delbert and Rita had a farm sale. That same year, Delbert became employed with Denison Engineering. Eleven years later in 1991, Delbert started working for Tur Pak in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa where he continued to work for 13 years, retiring in 2004. After aξfewξweeks of retirement, he decided to return to work for the City of Mapleton as a lawn care worker. He enjoyed working with the guys and stayed there until October of last year when his health dictated a change. Delbert greatly enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He and Rita were able to do some traveling and sightseeing in Utah, Arizona, California, and Hawaii.ξ Survivors include his wife, Rita with whom he was approaching 50 years of marriage this year, hisξthree children,ξtwo sons, Todd and his wife, Sarah, of Fremont, California, Trent and his wife, Carissa, of Tracy, California andξone daughter, Tricia and Michael Wingfield of Grapevine, Texas, one daughter-in-law, Bernice of Boone, Iowa, four grandchildren Elizabeth, Brody, Kaitlyn, and Jacob along withξtwo step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, and one sister, Audrey Pekarek and her husband, Mahlon, of Blencoe, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Ethel Lafrentz andξhis father and mother-in-law, William and Erna Friedrichs. He was also preceded in death byξhis son Troy on August 9, 2006.
