Obituary for David Goodrich
Platt David Goodrich, Jr. was born August 16, 1928, on the farm west of Climbing Hill, Iowa. The family moved in to Climbing Hill where they owned and operated the grocery store and locker plant. He graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1946. and later drove school bus. David also worked in the store, often responsible for going to get the groceries and deliver them to the store shelves. On August 1, 1951, David was united in marriage to Janet Ruth Hummel at the First Baptist Church in Climbing Hill. This was just prior to David leaving to serve his country in the United States Army in Korea for a year. He was honorably discharged in 1952. David and Janet first lived on the family farm between Oto and Climbing Hill where they started farming. They had a farm sale in 1994 when they retired. They had already moved in to Climbing Hill in 1992, where they have lived until the present time. He was a member of the Climbing Hill First Baptist Church and the American Legion Hindman-Steele Post #492 of Hornick, Iowa. He was also a Director at the Hornick Coop for a 12 year period as well as a Director at the Climbing Hill Savings Bank. The joys in his life were family, farming and fishing. He sincerely enjoyed going fishing in Canada and fishing locally with his buddy Whitey Sulsberger. He also shared a deep affection for his German Shepherd, Sarah. Those survivors left to embrace their memories of David include, Janet, his wife, of 63 years, who David often called "Charlie"; one son, Mike Goodrich and his wife, Kerri, of Hornick, Iowa; one step grandson, Casey Jepsen, of Chicago, Illinois; one sister, Maxine Clem of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Dick Hummel and his wife, LaDonna of Rapid City, South Dakota; four sisters-in-law, Delores Hummel of Moville, Iowa, Margie Ross of Lakeland, Florida, Jeanie Hummel of Homer, Nebraska, and Ella June Daily and her husband, Ray, of Santa Fe, New Mexico; along with many nieces and nephews; and a host of good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Leonard Goodrich, in infancy; two sisters, Leona Kenny and her husband, Boyd and Bonnie Coon; three brothers-in-law, Ron Clem, Phil Hummel, and Randy Hummel.
