Obituary for Arlene Nichols
Arlene Nichols Mapleton, IA - Arlene M. Nichols, 90, of Mapleton, Iowa died Monday, December 3, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Services will be Thursday, December 6 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church at Mapleton with Pastor Brian McNamara officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Arlene Marie Nichols was born February 11, 1922, at home in Harrison County, Iowa near Woodbine the daughter of Jacob and Aqusta Sophie (Sewing) Ulmer. She graduated from high school in 1938 and then completed Normal Training. She taught in country school in Lincoln Center in Harrison County and also taught at the Nichols School in Monona County. She married Glen Nichols November 7, 1942. The couple farmed near Dunlap for nine years. In 1958, the family moved to a farm near Mapleton and in 1976, the couple moved to town. They owned and operated a tavern in Moorhead, Iowa for eight years. Glen passed away February 7, 1981. Arlene was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, the Sunshine Social Club in Moorhead, the Sunshine Quilting Club around Mapleton and Castana, and the Methodist Night Circle. She was a always a very kind and generous lady. She loved her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids and was always there when needed. Survivors include her two children, Glenda Muckey and her husband, Don and Rick Nichols and his wife, Becky, all of Mapleton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Richard Muckey and his wife, Maria and Darren Muckey and his wife, Kristy, Josh Nichols and his wife, Jenny, and Ali Nichols Patera and her husband, Grant; 14 great grandchildren, Dylan and Jacob Muckey, Emily and Chelsea Yockey, Noah, Zoe, Brooklyn, and Logan Muckey, McKenna and Carson Nichols, and Alexis, Blake, Addison, and Sophia Patera; one brother, Donald Ulmer and two sisters, Thelma Ulmer and Lucille Hull, all of Denison, Iowa. Along with her husband, Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother Gerald Ulmer.
