Obituary for Alice R. Weber
Alice Weber, age 85, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, December 6, 2021, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Bill McCarthy will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery of Danbury, Iowa. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a rosary service at 6:45 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa.

Alice Rose Rita Weber was born on October 29, 1936, on a farm west of Danbury, Iowa, the eleventh of twelve children of John and Anna (Kleine) Weber. She received her grade school education at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Danbury Catholic High School in 1955 as valedictorian. She had the honor of being May Queen and crowning Our Blessed Mother as Queen. In September of 1955, she entered the convent at Mount St. Clare in Clinton, Iowa and was professed in 1958. She furthered her education at the Mount, DePaul University in Chicago, IL, University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA, Dominican University in Chicago, as well as others. She held a B.S. in Elementary Education and M.A. in Library Science.
Alice taught school for 39 years in Illinois and Iowa, spending the last 26 years in the Maquoketa Community School District where she was instrumental in setting up various new programs for the district. These new programs included reading programs for grades one through six, transitional second grade, the pre-first grade program, and ABC Math program. Her name appeared in the Who’s Who in Education and the Who’s Who in Primary Education for several editions. In 1986 she was the recipient of the distinguished Elementary Mathematics Teacher of Iowa award as well as the MEA Teacher of the Year for the Maquoketa School District. She was instrumental in promoting the ABC Math classes to many teachers throughout Iowa. When she retired, she moved to Mapleton, Iowa. There she pursued her love of gardening and flowers.
Alice was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton. There she was instrumental in setting up the prayer phone tree as well as establishing a lending library of her religious books. She also begged for weekly Adoration, which was granted by Msgr. Mark Duchaine.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law Ellen Weber of Danbury, IA and Evonne Weber of Denison, IA; brother-in-law Tom Thiel of Seattle, WA; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna (Kleine) Weber; sisters and brothers-in-law: Mary Ann (Paul) Schoenherr, Irma (Jim) Sokolowski, Lois (Ron) Seuntjens, Helen Thiel, Carole (Jim) Barkley, and Martha (John) Halloran; brothers and sisters-in-law: Raymond (Rita) Weber, James Weber, Leo (Helen) Weber, Donald (Marian) Weber, and Vernal Weber.
