Obituary for Frances Lena Koeppen
Frances Lena (Herrington) Koeppen, age 98, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Rev. Chris LaBoube will officiate; with Committal Services following in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online www.armstrongfuneral.com.

Frances Lena (Herrington) Koeppen, was born on February 20, 1920. She was the youngest of four children born to Harvey H. and Mahala (Hostetler) Herrington. Frances grew up near Danbury, Iowa until the age of 10 when her family relocated to a farm south of Mapleton, Iowa. She attended Sunny Side Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Castana High School with the class of 1939.

On September 7, 1939, Frances was united in marriage to Ernest Koeppen at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa. In later years they became members of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Mapleton, Iowa and enjoyed being active members. She was also a member of the Sunshine Club and enjoyed quilting and the fellowship of all the ladies. Frances was an active member of St. Matthew LCW and loved playing cards and spending time with her family.

Ernie and Frances lived in the country most of their lives. In 1947 they moved to Scandia, Alberta, Canada and bought a farm in irrigation country. After they endured several years of being hailed out, they returned to the Mapleton area in 1953. She was an Avon representative for a number of years and worked for a short time at IBP in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Frances also kept the books for the couples backhoe and Roto Rooter Service. The couple retired in 1994 and moved into Mapleton. Ernie passed away in 1998 and in 2009 Frances moved into an apartment. She became a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in 2017, where she enjoyed taking part in activities and interacting with the staff and residents.

Those left to cherish the memories of their Mother and Granny are her children Zola (Wayne) Kafton of Mapleton, IA and Larry (Susan) Koeppen of Liberty, MO; sister-in-law Marie Miller of Moses Lake, WA; 8 grandchildren: Valerie (Jim) Plambeck, Teresa (Randy) Coenen, Angela (Stuart) Martinez, Karen (Timothy) Jessen, Tim (Ester) Kafton, Shawnie (Mike) Allen, Heather Hulber, and Justin (Sarah) Koeppen; 21 great grandchildren: Steven, Dean, Jamie, Jenny, Ryan, Tyler, Tara, Soren, Tova, Eli, Isaac, Tira, Zoe Frances, Rayna, Nolan, Danica, Marek, Cypher, Grayson, and Ayla; 17 great-great grandchildren; extended family and friends.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Ernie Koeppen; parents Harvey and Mahala Herrington; brother Loren (Virginia) Herrington; two sisters Fern (Boots) Dean and Doris (Felix) Wiseman; daughter Ardis (James) Wilson; daughter-in-law Beverly Koeppen; father and mother-in-law Louis and Alma Koeppen; brothers-in-law Lou (Edna) Koeppen, Herbert (Esther) Koeppen, and Lester Miller; and sister-in-law Elsie (Alvie) Hinrichsen.
